It’s Wednesday!

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

Happy Wednesday everyone! Before I get started with my works in progress I have to share this funny story. About 15 minutes ago we put Gav down to sleep. He just called me into his room saying he needed to blow his nose, I went in tissue in hand and helped him blow his nose. He then informed me that there were boogers on the wall. Apparently he has taken to putting his boogers there next to his bed. A little bit of yuck and a whole lot of funny. The joys of raising boys!

I haven’t sewn in 2 days so this poor quilt is almost halfway done being quilted begging to be finished.

At first I thought I would just quilt on the outside of the pattern zigs, or is it the zags?, then I decided that’s too much space in between quilting lines and so I’m going to go back and quilt on the other side of the seams. So far I’m loving it but boy is it a pain to move this thing around on my tiny machine!! I definitely want   need a new machine! There are a few other Wip’s I have laying around but the most recent thing I’m making is fabric letters I found on Pinterest here. I thought this might be a really good way to help Caleb learn his alphabet since singing it and reading it in a book don’t seem to get his attention enough. It will also give Gav a head start on his learning.  Here’s what I have so far, most letters cut out and fabric chosen.

I just went to a Kindergarden Orientation for Caleb tonight and am just blown away at how much it has changed since I was in Kindergarden! It’s so much more academic based than it was once upon a time. Not only is it a lot of work for the kids, but parents as well!!! Guess I’m back to doing homework 5 nights a week! As scared as I am of having my baby go to school all day 5 days a week, I’m also excited for this next stage in his life. I’m just going to try to really enjoy this last semester of Preschool and enjoy these days to their fullest. It all goes by so fast and I want to make sure I just stop and live in the moment.

My boy is so silly. #lovemykids

WiP Wednesday

20 Jun

We are back safe and sound from our little weekend Father’s Day trip to San Jose. We had such a good time, and we ate a ton of yummy Peruvian food, took lots of pictures, and stayed up way past our bed time every night. I have so many pictures to sort through and will probably break them up into two posts, one for Father’s day itself, and another for the trip the hubby and I took into San Francisco without the kiddos. Onto what I came here for today, my works in progress. I have finished cutting up my squares and rectangles for my plus quilt

If I’m going to make this quilt bed size (yikes, that means King) then I will have to cut more fabric. But I figured this gives me a good start because I really dislike the cutting part of quilting. Maybe I will get at least one block pieced tonight, we’ll see. I’m still stitching away at my granny squares quilt, haven’t actually made any progress since last week since we were gone all weekend. And here’s what arrived while we were gone

My Vintage Modern charm pack and my scrap bag full of awesome fabric. I cannot wait to use some of these prints! Here they are all spread out

Some of these pieces are pretty big, and only one i think was on the smaller side. All in all I am super happy with what I received. I got these on Etsy from spice berry cottage and i highly recommend this shop. I placed my order on a Tuesday and it was delivered Saturday same week. Wow. That’s fast! While I was gone Fabricworm was having an inventory clearance to make room for new collections, so of course I grabbed some prints I’ve been wanting, like Flea Market Fancy!! I’m so excited! I got 6 half yard cuts of my favorite prints and a half yard cut of an American Jane, School Days print. My stash is definitely  growing!

And last up on my works in progress is my photo a day challenge. Here are the past 10 shots

9. Your view today (and everyday really) 10. Best bit of your weekend (usually is) 11. Door (why yes, those are Christmas decorations, what?) 12. From a low angle 13. WiP Wednesday

13 Jun

Is it Wednesday already? Halfway through the week and I actually have the weekend off to look forward to, woo hoo! I’ve been pretty busy since last Wednesday finishing up a few projects I had on my list and powering along on my granny squares quilt. Here’s a little peak at my stitching.

I absolutely LOVE the way the hand quilting looks on this baby. My stitches are getting more consistent and I’m happy that the back is coming out consistent as well. I’m using an embroidery needle which is pretty sharp and my middle finger has taken quite a few hits, but the more I quilt the more I avoid pricking myself. I managed to cut some squares and rectangles up for my next quilt today, I have no idea yet how big I want this to be so for now I’m cutting up enough for a lap size, although that could change.

iPhone and Instagram to the rescue on this one. When there’s low lighting my phone always seems to get pretty decent shots. I got all these cut today. How did I do that with two wild toddler boys you ask?

With Play-Doh of course! I asked the boys if they wanted to play with Play-Doh while mommy pressed her fabric and they stayed interested in it long enough for me to press everything AND cut more than half of what I needed. I wish that they had stayed interested in it this afternoon as well while I was exercising but no such luck. Good news, I still finished my work out, just to the sound of crying and whining children who wanted to crawl all over me and watch Netflix. Nothing like stretching after a workout all sweaty and gross and having your kids think your making a bridge for them to crawl under. I’m just proud of myself for not making excuses and getting it done!

And lastly, I pulled some fabric to make some more wallet organizers and pressed that fabric as well. I ran out of time to cut it, but I’m just glad I got to press it. One of these will go to my sister and one for me! So sister, now would be the time to let me know if you like this combo!

I love that fish print. I picked it up at Momen+ awhile ago and if I have enough after the organizers I’m going  to use it for another camera case. If I cut it right I should be able to make it stretch. Well, that’s it for me today. I’m pooped and just want to kick back on the sofa, watch So You Think You Can Dance and continue quilting my granny square quilt. Happy Wednesday!

Fabric on my doorstep

7 May

Who doesn’t love getting packages in the mail? I know I LOVE it, especially if it’s fabric. I always browse Etsy and all the fabric shops there, but I have never actually bought anything until last week. I found a shop that was closing and listed was a bag of designer scraps equaling around 2 yards in fabric for $11. I thought it was perfect for little projects and ordered it. Well, it came the other day and I was so excited to see what that little bag held.

There are some fabrics in here that I absolutely cannot wait to work with. I’m thinking of making this,  this, and one of these. Of course I’ll probably make some more hexies as well. Since I missed last Wednesday’s WiP update due to my last post taking around 3 days to write, I’ll show you my progress on the hexi quilt today as a bonus.

Since then I’ve made a lot of progress, at least it seems like a lot since it’s all done by hand. Here’s a closeup of the hexies

I don’t understand why on all the research I did on hexagon quilts I could only find  one that explained how to make sure your stitches don’t show through the front, and even that one didn’t say too much about it. Well, here’s what I learned, use grey thread or a color that matches both hexies as close as possible and make your stitches tight. There is definitely a learning curve to this as my fist brown diamond has stitches showing through, but the ones after that do not. Who knows, maybe I’ll even decide to branch out into the tutorial world and try writing one up myself.
